The Big Cave
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE BIG CAVE
The boat is anchored in front of the northeastern end of Punta Grossa, near a small outcrop known as Punta D'En Banc, over 25 m of water. The anchorage is located just in front of the entrance to the cave to visit. The immersion You begin by descending along the anchor rope until you reach a bottom dominated by large wedged blocks between which corridors and tunnels are formed. This is a very attractive area, with the bottom at 32 m, although a short distance away the depth is 40 m. In this underwater landscape there is red coral from 30 or 32 m, in addition to three-tails, groupers, moray eels, etc.
SEA FOG
The side walls of the small cove surrounding the cave entrance are covered with white gorgonian. In summer, between 32 and 25 m deep, sometimes a phenomenon of turbidity of the water takes place similar to an underwater fog in which it is almost possible to hide. After visiting the outer depths of the cave, we went to its entrance: a dark and immense opening that has the base at 32 m and the lintel at 17 m deep, that is, this imposing entrance is 15 m high. and exceeds 10 m in width.
DIVISION INTO TWO BRANCHES
From here, the Cueva Grande presents two large ramifications. If you continue in a straight line, after traveling for 50 m through a tunnel approximately 30 m in diameter, whose wall is full of attractive holes, you come to a sandy bottom located at a depth of 12 m, from which it is possible to admire the distant and beautiful backlights of the entrance. Then, as if it were a siphon or a chimney, the bottom of the cave rises rapidly, forcing perfect control of the vest to control the speed of the ascent. It then emerges in a calm lake covered by a wide dome of limestone. Here you can see, among other attractions, capricious nature, stalactites, stalagmites, long and narrow macaroons hanging from the ceiling and rounded rocks. After floating for a long time, relaxing before this geological spectacle, you descend in search of the exit.
BLUE BRIGHTNESS
From a certain depth, at 12 or 15 m, it is pleasant to turn off the lights and be guided by the intense blue color of the water. Next to the entrance of the cave, towards the East, the second branch of the cave opens, consisting of a rocky tunnel 30 m wide and 30 m long, which gradually ascends until it reaches the surface. Exploring the Cueva Grande allows you to discover red coral, lobsters, langoustines, sand crabs -the ground is full of skeletons of this type of urchin-, three tails, conger eels, brotolas and, on occasions, groupers.
